The AKI report reveals concerning trends in vehicle thefts in Kenya, with ‘KD’ registration plates and Toyota cars being most frequently targeted. Notable stats include 54.91% of stolen vehicles being Toyotas and low recovery rates of only 15.92%. The report urges vehicle owners to strengthen security measures.

A recent report from the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) has highlighted a concerning increase in vehicle thefts in Kenya, particularly targeting cars with registration numbers beginning with ‘KD’. In 2024, these vehicles represented 50.15% of stolen cars, indicating a significant risk for owners of such vehicles. Notably, a total of 327 vehicle thefts were reported, showing a decline from 419 in 2023.

The report underscores the importance of vehicle security, especially for those driving high-risk models, including Toyota and certain categories of cars. Despite a slight decrease in theft cases, vehicle owners are encouraged to implement enhanced security measures, given that recovery rates are still low and specific trends have emerged in the types and brands of vehicles that are most frequently stolen.
