Nigeria will compete in two matches during this qualification round; the first against Rwanda in Kigali on Friday and the second against Zimbabwe four days later. Players began arriving at the training camp on Sunday, including star forward Victor Osimhen, who remarked to the BBC, “They are determined to lead Nigeria to the tournament.”
Coach Eric Chelle, along with other team officials, arrived and will commence preparations on Tuesday. The following players were reported to have reached the camp by Monday evening: Amas Obasogie, Tolu Arokodare, Kayode Bankole, Victor Osimhen, Simon Moses, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Papa Daniel.
Currently, Nigeria ranks fifth, trailing Rwanda by four points. As a newly appointed coach, Eric Chelle is expected to deliver promising results as this will be his third stint leading the Eagles in the qualification matches since November 2023. His predecessors, Jose Peseiro and Finidi George, faced mixed results in prior matches.
Additionally, Coach Chelle has made a change in the squad, replacing injured midfielder Nathan Tella from Bayer Leverkusen with Joshua Torunarigha of Gent, Belgium.
In summary, the Super Eagles are diligently preparing for their World Cup qualifying matches in Rwanda. With a well-selected squad and a new coach, expectations are high for improved performance. The team’s recent history shows challenges, yet there is a renewed hope under Coach Chelle’s leadership as they aim to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
