Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old Iowan, is detained in the Dominican Republic as a person of interest in the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki. Riibe is prohibited from leaving his hotel, facing significant questioning without legal representation. His family expresses concern for his treatment, while the community offers support amid the ongoing search for Konanki.
Authorities in the Dominican Republic have detained Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old from Rock Rapids, Iowa, confiscating his passport due to his status as a person of interest in the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student. Riibe, currently attending St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, is confined to a hotel under police escort and is reportedly the last person seen with Konanki before her disappearance on March 6.
Konanki, who was on a spring break trip with friends, is believed to have been last seen early March 6 on the beach. Video footage captured her departing the beach with Riibe, while he left later without her. However, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the investigation into her disappearance is not criminal, indicating that Riibe is not considered a suspect.
Riibe’s family expressed their devastation over the situation, issuing a statement that highlighted their sorrow and solidarity with Konanki’s family, stressing their hope for her safe return. They maintained that despite Riibe’s willingness to cooperate, he has faced questionable conditions during his detention, including extensive questioning without proper legal representation.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office shared a supportive statement from Riibe’s friends, emphasizing the community’s backing and recognizing his character as kind and respectful. The community requests privacy for Riibe and his family during this challenging time.
In a police interview, Riibe described a troubling incident in the ocean, recalling that he and Konanki were overtaken by a wave as they attempted to seek help. He conveyed his efforts to rescue Konanki, admitting he struggled to keep her afloat and sustained water intake during the incident. Previously, the Hotel Riu Republica experienced a power outage; however, electricity was restored before Konanki’s last sighting, and security cameras remained operational during that time.
The situation surrounding the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki has led to Joshua Riibe’s detainment in the Dominican Republic due to his status as a person of interest. Riibe’s family has voiced their concerns regarding his treatment while cooperating with authorities. The community stands united in support of Riibe, wishing for a swift resolution regarding Konanki’s whereabouts. Ensuring fairness in the legal process remains a priority.
