Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique on 10 March 2025, impacting over 375,000 people and severely damaging infrastructure in Nampula and Zambezia provinces. The cyclone exacerbated vulnerabilities from earlier storms, raising health risks including cholera. Authorities and organizations are responding to the urgent needs of displaced populations.

On 10 March 2025, Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique’s Nampula province, resulting in damaging heavy rainfall and strong winds. By 13 March, the National Institute for Disaster Management recorded that 375,214 individuals had been affected, with 81,149 homes damaged or destroyed. The cyclone has intensified the vulnerabilities in already struggling communities, particularly in food security and access to essential services, as severe flooding and extensive infrastructure damage impacted Nampula and Zambezia provinces.

This cyclone season has proven to be particularly destructive, following the earlier impacts of Tropical Cyclones Chido in December 2024 and Dikeledi in January 2025, which together affected about 684,000 people. As Cyclone Jude progressed inland, it diminished to a severe storm over Manica, Niassa, Sofala, and Tete, compounding the cumulative effects of the recent cyclones and elevating humanitarian needs in the region.

Health risks are escalating alongside displacement challenges, as the latest cholera bulletin reports 56 cases in the hard-hit Nampula province as of 14 March 2025. No new cases have been documented in the last 24 hours; however, there are persisting concerns over potential outbreaks due to polluted water sources and overcrowded temporary accommodations.

Preliminary findings from an Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the CCCM Cluster and INGD have recognized over 61 temporary accommodation facilities hosting displaced populations. These sites are providing crucial shelter for evacuated households, while authorities and humanitarian organizations are actively working to evaluate and address urgent needs related to food aid, safe water supply, sanitation, healthcare, and protection services.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a significant impact on Mozambique, particularly in Nampula province, affecting over 375,000 individuals and causing extensive infrastructure damage. With the onset of health risks like cholera, the situation remains critical. Continued assessment is necessary to address the humanitarian needs arising from this disaster and previous cyclones, with efforts focusing on shelter, food, water, sanitation, and health services for those displaced.
