In 2024, a report by the Association of Kenyan Insurers indicates that 54.91 percent of stolen vehicles in Kenya were Toyotas, highlighting their status as the most targeted make. The total number of vehicle thefts decreased by 28 percent from the previous year, with significant numbers also recorded for other brands such as Isuzu, Mazda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

A recent study conducted by the Association of Kenyan Insurers (AKI) reveals that Toyota vehicles are the most frequently stolen cars in Kenya. This report covers instances of vehicle theft from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. Astonishingly, 54.91 percent of all stolen vehicles during this period were Toyotas.

In addition to Toyotas, other car brands also appeared prominently in theft statistics. Isuzu constituted 12.88 percent of stolen vehicles, while Mazda accounted for 7.06 percent. Furthermore, Nissan and Mitsubishi represented 5.83 percent and 3.99 percent of the stolen vehicle categories, respectively.

The report indicates that a total of 327 vehicles were reported stolen in 2024. This figure shows a notable 28 percent reduction compared to the 419 thefts recorded in 2023. This decline in theft rate suggests potential improvements in vehicle security and law enforcement efficacy in Kenya.

The analysis from the Association of Kenyan Insurers underscores Toyota’s prominence as the most stolen vehicle in the country, representing over half of all thefts in 2024. While the decline in overall vehicle thefts is encouraging, other brands also remain at risk. Continued vigilance and enhanced security measures will be crucial in reducing the incidence of vehicle theft in Kenya.
