Tropical Cyclone Jude Results in Loss of Life and Displacement in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused nine fatalities in Mozambique and Malawi, displacing thousands and leading to severe flooding. Mozambique reported six deaths while Malawi accounted for three. Relief operations are currently affected by washed away infrastructure, compounding recovery difficulties from previous cyclones.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals across Mozambique and Malawi, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported six fatalities, 20 injuries, and displacements affecting approximately 9,525 residents in Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia provinces. In Malawi, three deaths occurred and around 20,000 people were displaced due to severe flooding caused by the cyclone.
In Malawi, Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), confirmed that the displaced individuals are currently being housed in evacuation centers. Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique on Sunday and subsequently progressed to southern Malawi, where it caused significant rainfall and flooding from Monday through Wednesday.
Relief efforts are being hindered by the destruction of roads and bridges, which have been severely washed away, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This situation compounds the challenges faced by both countries, especially as they recover from Cyclone Chido, which struck in December, resulting in a collective toll of 86 lives lost in both Mozambique and Malawi.
The impact of Tropical Cyclone Jude has been devastating, claiming nine lives and displacing thousands across Mozambique and Malawi. Continuous relief efforts face significant challenges due to damaged infrastructure. The region is still recovering from previous cyclones, emphasizing the urgent need for robust disaster management and preparedness measures.
