Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, with heavy flooding displacing thousands. Mozambique reported six fatalities, while Malawi confirmed three. Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in the tragic loss of at least nine lives, confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported six fatalities, with 20 individuals injured and over 9,500 displaced in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa and the central province of Zambezia.
In Malawi, three deaths have also been recorded, alongside approximately 20,000 individuals rendered homeless due to significant flooding in the southern region. Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, noted that those displaced are currently being housed in evacuation centers.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday and transitioned to southern Malawi, resulting in severe flooding from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that relief efforts are impeded by inaccessible roads and bridges washed away by the flooding. Previously, in December, Cyclone Chido had also affected both nations, causing 73 fatalities in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has led to significant devastation in Mozambique and Malawi, claiming nine lives and displacing thousands across both countries. Relief efforts are currently being hindered by infrastructure damage, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by affected communities. The situation underscores the increasing vulnerability of this region to severe weather events.
