A Bangladeshi youth named Kamrul Islam was shot and killed in Wepener, South Africa, during a robbery attempt. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Yeakubpur union, Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni, Kamrul had migrated to South Africa twelve years prior, seeking better opportunities before establishing his own business.

According to Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, the attackers approached Kamrul while he was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. He reported that two robbers threatened him with a firearm, stealing cash and valuables. In a desperate search for more money, they led him to his parked vehicle, during which one of the assailants shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death.

Kamrul was preparing for a significant life change, having completed construction on a new home in Karmullahpur and planning to return to Bangladesh to marry in a few months. His brother shared the family’s distress, mentioning their mother’s repeated fainting spells upon receiving news of her son’s tragic demise, exacerbated by the prior loss of their father.

The family has sought assistance from the Bangladeshi embassy to facilitate the repatriation of Kamrul’s body. In response, Daganbhuiyan upazila’s nirbahi officer, SM Azharul Islam, expressed the administration’s preparedness to support the family in any necessary arrangements for bringing Kamrul home.
