Concerns Rise Over Illegal Detention of Mondlane’s Treasurer in Mozambique

Gloria Nobre, treasurer for former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, is illegally detained in Maputo without access to family or a lawyer. Detained without a warrant, her health condition raises concerns. Efforts by her family and the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights to assist her have been obstructed by police, who cite an ongoing investigation.
Gloria Nobre, the treasurer for Venancio Mondlane, a former presidential candidate in Mozambique, is reportedly being illegally detained at a police station in Maputo. According to a report from the independent news outlet “Mediafax,” Nobre has been deprived of contact with her family and legal counsel since her detention on Wednesday, which occurred without an arrest warrant.
Nobre’s detention took place in the Alto Mae neighborhood as she left a cemetery visit with her daughter, Alina. The plain clothes police officers who detained her reportedly displayed documentation on a cellphone but did not provide a formal arrest warrant. Alina expressed concern over her mother’s health, noting her suffering from high blood pressure and asthma.
Attempts by the family’s lawyer to gain access to Nobre have been thwarted by the police, which is seen as a violation of her legal rights. The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) has assigned three lawyers to assist her, but police have also blocked their access. The CDD plans to file a complaint with the Attorney-General’s Office regarding this denial of legal assistance.
Agents from the Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) indicated that Nobre would remain inaccessible to her family and lawyers for 48 hours due to an ongoing investigation. This situation raises serious concerns over the treatment of individuals under police custody and the safeguarding of their legal rights in Mozambique.
The situation regarding Gloria Nobre’s detention highlights significant concerns about legal rights and due process in Mozambique. Detained without a warrant and denied access to family and legal representation, Nobre’s case exemplifies potential abuses within the policing system. The intervention by the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights indicates a growing awareness and advocacy for human rights within the country, emphasizing the need for accountability and legal protections.
