Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi youth, was shot dead during a robbery in Wepener, South Africa. Having moved there 12 years ago, he had established a business and was preparing to return to Bangladesh to marry. His family is seeking assistance to repatriate his body while local authorities express their readiness to support them.

A tragic incident occurred in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa, where a Bangladeshi man, Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was shot and killed on Thursday evening. Originally from Karmullahpur village in the Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni, Kamrul had migrated to South Africa 12 years ago. After a brief stint of employment, he successfully established his own business.

The incident unfolded as two armed assailants attempted to rob him while he was closing his shop at approximately 9:00 PM. During the robbery, the attackers held Kamrul at gunpoint and looted cash and other valuables. They subsequently forced him to his car, suspecting more money was inside. During a confrontation, one of the robbers shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death.

Kamrul Islam was planning to return to Bangladesh in a few months to marry, having recently built a new home for his family in Karmullahpur village. His brother, Kamruzzaman, indicated that their mother has been deeply affected by the news, fainting repeatedly after learning of the tragedy. The family has reached out for assistance from the Bangladesh embassy to repatriate Kamrul’s body.

Furthermore, SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer in Daganbhuiyan, expressed the administration’s willingness to aid Kamrul’s family in facilitating the return of his body. The local authorities are prepared to provide any necessary support during this difficult time.

The untimely death of Kamrul Islam underscores the dangers faced by expatriates. His aspirations and plans for the future were abruptly cut short by this tragic robbery. The support offered by local officials and the family’s plea for assistance from the embassy reflect the community’s response to this heartbreaking event.
