A tragic incident occurred in South Africa on Thursday night, resulting in the death of a Bangladeshi businessman. Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was fatally shot by armed robbers at his shop in Vepener, located in the Free State Province. This unfortunate event transpired around 9 PM Bangladesh time, confirming the rising concerns regarding the safety of expatriates abroad.
Kamrul was the son of the late Abdul Mannan Miah from Ozi Ullah Hafez Bari. He resided in Karmullahpur village within the Yakubpur Union, Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni district. His elder brother, Kamruzzaman, provided further details on the incident, noting that Kamrul had relocated to South Africa 12 years ago. Initially employed in a job, he later ventured into business and had plans to return to Bangladesh soon.
According to Kamruzzaman, two armed individuals entered Kamrul’s store as he was closing for the night. After stealing cash and valuables, they forced him outside, presuming he possessed more money in his vehicle. Eyewitness accounts revealed that he was shot in the left side of his chest, resulting in his immediate death.
The family is currently coordinating with their relatives in South Africa to arrange for Kamrul’s body to be returned home. They have also requested assistance from the government in this endeavor. Daganbhuiyan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Azharul Islam acknowledged the incident and indicated ongoing efforts to liaise with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the family’s situation.
