The Edo State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a tragic motor accident in Benin City that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, around 5:30 p.m. in the Ring Road area, involving a white Vannette bus that reportedly collided with pedestrians while attempting to evade arrest by officials from the Edo State Public Safety Response. The child’s mother is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

According to Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu, the child’s lifeless body was transported to the hospital, where death was confirmed. Following the event, police operatives arrived rapidly to manage the situation, and one member of the Public Safety Response, linked to the accident, was rescued from a mob and taken into custody. Authorities are also actively working to locate the driver of the bus, who fled the scene.

Yamu detailed that pictorial evidence is being collected, along with other records to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Furthermore, Commissioner of Police Betty Enekpen Isokpan emphasized the importance of adherence to traffic regulations, urging all motorists to demonstrate patience and responsibility on the roads. She stated, “Every road user has the responsibility to protect his or her life and that of every other road user by obeying established road safety protocols.”

Witnesses allege that the incident was precipitated by a conflict for control of the vehicle between the Public Safety Response officers and the bus driver. Reportedly, the task force personnel were executing a surprise operation regarding an unspecified traffic violation, leading to a scuffle for the steering wheel while the vehicle was in motion. This resulted in the driver losing control and tragically hitting the toddler standing next to her mother, causing fatal injuries.

In summary, the investigation into the fatal motor accident in Benin City highlights the serious implications of traffic law enforcement practices and driver safety. The Edo State Police Command is diligently pursuing the responsible parties while emphasizing the importance of road safety and accountability among all motorists. The involvement of the Public Safety Response personnel in this incident raises significant concerns, prompting calls for adherence to traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
