An Angola resident has entered a guilty plea to manslaughter charges following a tragic accident resulting in a child’s death. Markus R. Genovese, aged 53, admitted guilt in Erie County Court before Judge James Bargnesi to charges including second-degree manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter, along with a count for fleeing the incident scene.

On June 8, 2024, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Mr. Genovese was driving a pickup truck north on Lake Shore Road in Hamburg when he collided with another vehicle. At the time, he was driving under the influence while unlicensed, crashing into the rear of a stationary SUV, which was preparing to turn left onto Eckhardt Road.

After the collision, Mr. Genovese abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene. He was later found by police in nearby woods and subsequently transported to Erie County Medical Center. The accident resulted in the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy who was a rear seat passenger in the victim’s SUV, while a 4-year-old passenger sustained injuries and was subsequently treated and released.

Mr. Genovese is facing a maximum sentence of 15 years upon his scheduled sentencing on May 12 at 9:30 a.m. He is currently being held without bail. District Attorney Michael Keane praised the Town of Hamburg Police Department and their Accident Investigation Unit for their diligent work in this case, which was led by Assistant District Attorneys Christopher M. McCarthy and Natasha G. Greenan.
