SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, has marked a significant milestone by exceeding 1 gigawatt (GW) of power delivery for hydrogen applications. This achievement follows their recent installation of SMA inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen initiative, which integrates photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production, underscoring Altenso’s leadership in renewable energy solutions.
Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, reported that the company has successfully completed over 80 hydrogen projects, which predominantly produce green hydrogen from photovoltaic and wind energy sources. He stated that Altenso’s technological expertise and international project management capabilities are essential for the execution of complex projects, including offshore endeavors, and that the initiatives can lead to the annual production of approximately 130,000 tons of green hydrogen, significantly aiding industrial decarbonization.
SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert highlighted the necessity of stable grid integration and load control due to the changing landscape of hydrogen and renewable energy markets. He acknowledged the critical role of SMA’s technologies and Altenso’s project management experience in facilitating renewable energy integration and shaping future energy dynamics.
At the Namibia Atlantic coast project, Altenso oversees the integration of battery storage systems and the provision of power-to-gas solutions for hydrogen production. The project’s photovoltaic farm and battery inverter technology installation are expected to be completed by the end of 2024, and hydrogen production is anticipated to commence in mid-2025. SMA’s advanced rectifier solution, employing IGBT technology, enhances compatibility with various electrolyzers and contributes to grid stability through integrated services such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.
In addition, Altenso has developed a sophisticated energy management system tailored to optimize sustainable hydrogen production by leveraging photovoltaic forecasts and dynamic demand profiles.
