Tropical Cyclone Jude struck the coast of Mozambique at approximately 06:00 local time on March 10, 2025, resulting in severe weather conditions characterized by heavy rain and strong winds. This cyclone represents the third significant storm to impact the region within a three-month period, further exacerbating the challenges faced by local communities.

Upon landfall in the Mossuril district of Nampula Province, Jude exhibited maximum sustained winds reaching 120 km/h (75 mph) and gusts soaring to 195 km/h (120 mph). These powerful winds, combined with substantial rainfall, have led to widespread destruction and significant flooding throughout the impacted areas.

Additionally, Mozambique Airlines announced the cancellation of all domestic flights to northern cities, with assurances to passengers regarding future accommodations once conditions allow.

Forecasts indicated that coastal districts, including Memba, Monapo, Mossuril, Mozambique Island, and Nacala, could receive up to 200 mm (7.9 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours, contributing to the ongoing severe flooding. Numerous reports have confirmed damage to residential buildings, infrastructure, and roadways in the affected regions.

In response to the crisis, the provincial directorate of education mandated the closure of all schools in the province for the duration of Monday. Notably, there have been no reported fatalities or injuries thus far, although assessments of the cyclone’s total impact are still underway.

The cyclone’s impact includes power outages for tens of thousands of households and extensive damage to infrastructure.
