The Windhoek High Court is set to commence the trial of Rodney Hoxobeb, a 29-year-old farmworker accused of murdering his employer, Christof Mungunda, in September 2022 at Tallismanus settlement in the Omaheke region. Hoxobeb, who had been employed on Mungunda’s farm since July 2022, was briefly presented in court on Monday.
The prosecution’s indictment alleges that an argument arose between Hoxobeb and Mungunda on September 16, 2022. Subsequently, Hoxobeb purportedly informed his girlfriend of his intent to kill Mungunda. Later that evening, it is claimed that he utilized a wooden axe handle to strike Mungunda multiple times as he walked back to his farmhouse after turning off a generator.
As per the indictment, when Hoxobeb noticed that Mungunda was still alive, he is alleged to have taken a rock and struck Mungunda’s head. A postmortem examination confirmed that Mungunda succumbed to blunt-force trauma at the scene. Following the assault, Hoxobeb allegedly fled the scene in Mungunda’s Toyota pick-up alongside his girlfriend and her cousin.
In an attempt to escape, Hoxobeb reportedly collided with a co-worker. The prosecution contends that during his flight, he consumed alcohol and drove recklessly in the Kanaan location, resulting in multiple charges against him, including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and driving under the influence, among others.
