Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai’s body returned to Nairobi after he was killed during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. His death highlights the increasing gang violence in Haiti, where over 5,600 people were reported killed in 2024. The situation remains critical as funding for the peacekeeping mission has faced uncertainty, yet efforts continue to restore stability in the region.

On March 10, 2025, the body of Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, who lost his life during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. His return is a poignant moment for the nation, reflecting the collective mourning for a fallen hero.

Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, led a contingent of officers in receiving Kaetuai’s remains. Among those present were nominated Senator Peris Tobiko, grieving family members, and friends, including his father, Salaash Kaetuai. His body has been transferred to Chiromo Mortuary while the family makes burial preparations, with the date for the final farewell to be announced shortly.

Officer Kaetuai was fatally injured during an engagement with armed gangs while on duty in Haiti. The Multinational Security Support Mission confirmed the incident via social media, stating that he died from injuries sustained during the conflict. The National Police Service later revealed that he was attacked by suspected gang members, and despite swift medical assistance, he could not be saved.

Kenya’s Foreign Ministry Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’oei, conveyed his condolences on social media, expressing that he was “heartbroken by the loss of a member of Kenya’s deployment.”

Kaetuai’s death highlights the escalating violence in Haiti, where gang-related incidents have surged. The United Nations reported over 5,601 fatalities from such violence in 2024, an increase of 1,000 deaths from the previous year. The UN also noted serious concerns regarding lynching and summary executions, with over a million people displaced due to the unrest.

The peacekeeping mission in Haiti faces ongoing uncertainty. In February, the mission’s funding was briefly suspended by the United States government. However, a waiver from Secretary of State Marco Rubio later restored funding, allowing the critical efforts to continue. The tragic circumstances surrounding Kaetuai’s death emphasize the perilous situation faced by peacekeepers operating in unstable regions.

The tragic death of Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers faced by peacekeepers in Haiti, a nation plagued by rampant gang violence. His return to Kenya marks a moment of collective grief and remembrance for his service. While the peacekeeping mission aims to restore stability, the increasing violence underscores the urgent need for effective strategies to ensure the safety of personnel involved in such operations.
