In early October, a honeymoon became a frightening experience for newlyweds Doctor Caio Gomez and Fernanda Diniz when their cruise boat sank, leaving 50 individuals stranded. The couple was being transported from Dhigurah Island to Malé, the capital of the Maldives, when the incident occurred.
Gomez reported that after sailing for merely 40 minutes, a significant wave hit the boat, leading to its gradual sinking. “When we hit that wave, a really big wave came into the boat, but it didn’t sink us right away,” he noted. The couple shared a life jacket until they were ultimately rescued from the turbulent waters.
As the situation escalated, Gomez explained that they were not informed of the boat’s imminent sinking, but were instructed to don life jackets and enter the water. “The exit from the boat was peaceful; no one was too scared,” Gomez recounted. However, panic ensued when both he and his wife realized their life vests would not inflate.
Gomez described their efforts to find a loose life jacket in the water, which they managed to use for flotation. After approximately 30 to 40 minutes, they were rescued by another vessel. Fortunately, nobody perished during this alarming experience, although they lost their passports and were required to file police reports to facilitate their travel.
Witness accounts from other passengers illustrated the chaos that ensued. Gao, a fellow traveler, recounted how panic spread among tourists, exacerbated by the captain’s lack of instructions. Many opted to leap from the boat in desperation, fearing for their safety. Rescuers responded promptly, but adverse weather conditions delayed the operation by nearly half an hour.
