The Nigerian Bar Association, Minna Branch, condemns recent police shootings and extrajudicial killings in Niger State. They demand investigations, prosecution of responsible officers, and compensation for victims. Three recent incidents highlight this issue, with a strong call for police reform and preventive measures to restore community trust.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, has expressed grave concerns regarding the increasing instances of reckless shootings and extrajudicial killings perpetrated by police officers in Niger State. They have called upon local law enforcement to investigate and hold accountable those involved in these acts, provide compensation to the families of victims, and implement measures to prevent future incidences.

In a formal correspondence directed to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Chairman Barr. Isyaku Barau characterized the unlawful killings of civilians as severe violations of fundamental human rights, undermining public trust in law enforcement. He drew attention to three devastating incidents: the death of a Keke NAPEP rider, the shooting of a female immigration officer near Obasanjo Shopping Complex, and the recent murder of a football player allegedly caused by an intoxicated police officer.

Barr. Barau emphasized that these occurrences reflect a disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings and urged the police command to undertake immediate actions. These actions include conducting thorough investigations, prosecuting culpable officers, compensating victims’ families, and instituting preventive measures, which would involve reassessing firearm protocols and offering psychological evaluations for officers on duty.

The NBA Minna Branch further cautioned that efforts to protect those responsible for such acts would lead to strong legal repercussions and public outcry. They highlighted the crucial need to safeguard the lives and property of citizens and stressed the importance of police reforms to rebuild public trust and confidence in the law enforcement agency.

The Nigerian Bar Association Minna Branch has firmly addressed the escalating instances of police-related civilian fatalities in Niger State, advocating for immediate investigation and accountability. They emphasize the vital need for police reform and preventive measures to restore trust within the community, making clear that any attempts to evade responsibility will face public and legal action. The focus remains on safeguarding human rights and ensuring justice for victims.
