Rahul Gandhi Advocates for Lok Sabha Discussion on Voter List Concerns

Rahul Gandhi has demanded a discussion in the Lok Sabha on issues surrounding voter lists, citing concerns raised by opposition parties. He recognized that government does not make the lists but insisted on the need for dialogue. Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy pointed to specific flaws and called for a comprehensive revision before upcoming elections in West Bengal and Assam.
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, called for a parliamentary discussion concerning alleged issues with voter lists in India. Addressing the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Mr. Gandhi emphasized the collective demand from opposition parties for a thorough discussion regarding the integrity of these lists, which have been questioned nationwide.
Gandhi acknowledged that the government does not directly create the voter lists but insisted that a comprehensive conversation is necessary. He noted, “We accept your remarks that the government does not make voter lists. But we demand a discussion on the issue.” He reiterated that concerns have been raised uniformly across various states, with a specific mention of Maharashtra.
Additionally, Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy highlighted flaws within the voter lists, specifically citing instances where voters with identical Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers were found in different regions of West Bengal and Haryana. Subsequently, a Trinamool delegation plans to meet with the newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner to address these concerns.
Mr. Roy called for a detailed revision of voter lists ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam, as he identified significant inaccuracies that have previously occurred in Maharashtra and Haryana. He stated that the concerns have begun manifesting in regions set for elections, claiming, “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists.”
In summary, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to voter lists during a Lok Sabha session, reflecting a unified demand from opposition parties. Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy further underscored the necessity for scrutiny of voter registrations, indicating widespread concerns across multiple states as elections approach. There is a call for the Election Commission to clarify and revise the existing voter lists to ensure electoral integrity.
