Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, is believed to have drowned while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. She was last seen at the Riu Republica Resort and was reportedly swimming with a friend before vanishing. The U.S. State Department is involved, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, which has raised safety concerns in the region.

Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old student from the University of Pittsburgh, is believed to have drowned while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. She traveled with five other students and was last seen on security camera footage at approximately 4:50 a.m. on Thursday, wearing a bikini outside Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, she was walking on the beach with friends prior to her disappearance.

During the investigation, Dominican authorities reported that most of the group returned to the resort but one person remained with Konanki on the beach. They allegedly went swimming and were caught by a large wave. Despite these claims, Thomas Julia, a spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, stated that there is no concrete evidence to confirm that she drowned at this location, emphasizing that all possibilities, including foul play, are being explored.

Authorities have interviewed Konanki’s friends to determine the search area’s focus, as her friends reported her missing when she did not return to her room the following morning. She was last noted to be wearing distinctive jewelry, which matched a recent image of her. Konanki, a pre-med student anticipated to graduate in 2026, previously attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia.

The U.S. State Department is collaborating with the Indian embassy in the Dominican Republic, as Konanki is an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of the U.S. The investigation will encompass interviews with other students, family members, and individuals in both the Dominican Republic and Loudoun County. Meanwhile, the University of Pittsburgh expressed its support for Konanki’s family in their search efforts, urging anyone with information to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

This incident has emerged in the context of a recent U.S. State Department travel advisory, which urged increased caution for visitors to the Dominican Republic due to concerns about crime, including armed robbery and violence. Furthermore, guests at the Riu Republica Resort have been experiencing significant disruptions, including a lack of electricity, running water, and food availability, which has contributed to a strained atmosphere for tourists.

The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki has raised significant concerns regarding her safety while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. Investigative efforts are ongoing, with a focus on exploring all potential causes, including drowning and foul play. The U.S. State Department’s advisory regarding safety in the Dominican Republic further complicates the situation. Support for Konanki’s family continues, highlighting a community’s concern for her well-being amidst troubling circumstances.
