Catholic Priest Released from Kidnapping in Southern Nigeria

Father Livinus Maurice, a Catholic priest, has been released after being kidnapped on February 12 in Nigeria. His release followed pressure from a coordinated security team. However, another priest, Fr. Cornellus Manzak Damulak, remains abducted.
The Catholic priest abducted in southern Nigeria on February 12 has been freed. Father Livinus Maurice, the parish priest of St. Patrick’s Church in Isokpo, was taken by armed assailants while returning from a hospital visit, accompanied by two individuals. His abduction took place on the route from Elele to Isiokpo in Rivers State.
The Diocese of Port Harcourt, represented by Bishop Bernadine Anaele, issued a plea for Fr. Maurice’s unconditional release. Pressure from security forces led to the successful release of Fr. Maurice and the others on February 16. A police spokesperson reported, “their release was made following pressure from a mixed security team composed of police officers, soldiers of the Isiokpo Joint Task Force and local security officials.”
In the meantime, Fr. Cornellus Manzak Damulak remains kidnapped, having been taken from his home in the Bwari Area Council on February 6. Ongoing operations aim to apprehend the individuals responsible for these abductions, reflecting a continuing concern for the safety of clergy in Nigeria.
The release of Father Livinus Maurice on February 16 marks a significant outcome following his abduction on February 12. The coordinated efforts of local security forces highlight the importance of community and governmental response in addressing such criminal activities. However, the ongoing plight of another priest under captivity raises ongoing concerns regarding safety in Nigeria.
