Mass Electric Vehicle Initiative for Northeast Nigeria Announced

The Tinubu administration is set to launch mass electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria after the Federal Executive Council approved contracts worth nearly $100 million for buses and tricycles, along with charging infrastructure. Key suppliers include Bluecrest and Mutual Commitment, among others, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions in the region.
The administration of President Bola Tinubu is poised to initiate a comprehensive electric vehicle transport program in northeast Nigeria. Recently, the Federal Executive Council removed the final barriers to executing this initiative by approving contracts totaling nearly $100 million, equivalent to N151.9 billion, dedicated to the acquisition of electric buses, tricycles, and the implementation of charging infrastructure necessary for these vehicles.
The Council sanctioned a deal for the procurement of ten 17-seater electric buses, which will be supplied by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited within a six-month timeframe for N2.9 billion. Furthermore, Mutual Commitment Company Limited will provide 4,000 e-tricycles at a cost of N49.6 billion, with an expected delivery within nine months. In addition, Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development will deliver another 3,000 tricycles for N37.2 billion, alongside Sinoma Investment International Limited, which will also supply 3,000 e-tricycles.
The e-tricycles will have the capacity to accommodate nine passengers and a driver. Moreover, a contract valued at N16.3 billion has been awarded to Messrs. HNCEGC for supplying 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs. Furthermore, KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will establish the requisite charging stations for the electric buses and tricycles for N8.4 billion.
This significant investment is part of the North East Development Commission’s strategy to lower carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in the region. The procurement of these electric vehicles received President Tinubu’s approval last October, following a thorough inspection of vehicle samples, battery units, and chargers.
In summary, the Tinubu administration’s plan to introduce electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria aims to promote sustainable transport solutions while reducing carbon emissions. This initiative is supported by significant contractual investments for electric buses and tricycles, alongside the establishment of essential charging infrastructure. This marks a pivotal step towards enhancing energy efficiency within the region.
