Omar Alghabra, Canada’s Special Envoy for Syria, stresses the importance of preventing ‘darker forces’ from taking control amid escalating violence, emphasizing international engagement and support for civil society to foster democracy in Syria. He highlights Canada’s bond with the Syrian people through refugee resettlement and seeks to hold the new Syrian government accountable while promoting governance reforms.

The recent escalation of violence in Syria necessitates vigilance to prevent the rise of more dangerous groups, according to Omar Alghabra, Canada’s newly appointed Special Envoy for Syria. Alghabra, a Liberal Member of Parliament for Mississauga Centre, emphasized the urgent need for international engagement to monitor the situation closely during an interview on The West Block with Mercedes Stevenson.

Alghabra noted that the decline of Russian and Iranian-backed forces following the Assad regime’s fall has led to increased violence, with over 1,000 people, including approximately 750 civilians, reported dead due to clashes between government forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. This violence underscores the importance of preventing external malign influence from dominating Syria and affecting its citizens negatively.

At a recent Paris conference with European and Middle Eastern leaders, discussions centered on Syria’s future. Alghabra expressed optimism about the new Syrian government’s commitment to establishing an inclusive civil society, emphasizing Canada’s role in holding them accountable while allowing for adjustments to sanctions. The aim is to assist Syria in fostering democracy and ensuring it does not miss this critical opportunity for change.

Alghabra also highlighted Canada’s deep connection with the Syrian people, noting the nation’s efforts to resettle over 100,000 Syrian refugees who fled the war. Families across Canada have embraced these refugees, allowing many to successfully integrate into Canadian society.

Moreover, Canada aims to collaborate with international allies and local partners in undertaking constitutional studies, setting governance frameworks, and preparing for future elections to create a stable government in Syria. Alghabra affirmed a commitment to support civil society in establishing a vibrant democracy that benefits the Syrian populace.

Omar Alghabra’s remarks underscore Canada’s proactive stance in supporting Syria amid ongoing violence and instability. By fostering a collaborative international approach, the Canadian government seeks to help Syria achieve a democratic future while ensuring that the challenges posed by darker forces are effectively managed. With a commitment to the Syrian people, Canada aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s path to stability and governance.
