Abubakar Lawal’s death was confirmed by his football club and the Ugandan Police on February 24. Initial reports indicated a motorcycle accident; however, authorities later stated he fell from a shopping mall balcony in Kampala while visiting a friend from Tanzania. The late player, aged 29, was buried in Sokoto, his home state, with honors from his club, Vipers SC.
Mansour Lawal expressed gratitude towards the people of Nigeria and acknowledged the support his family received from the Sokoto State government. He particularly thanked the president of Vipers Club for ensuring the return of Abubakar’s remains, along with appreciation for friends, teammates, fans, and the Nigerian embassy for their efforts.
The Ugandan authorities have stated that they are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of Lawal’s death. Concurrently, the Nigerian government, represented by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda, has also vowed to uncover the truth.
According to the Uganda Police’s preliminary report, Lawal had arrived at the shopping mall to meet his friend at the hotel. After leaving Lawal in the room, the friend went to a game center, only to soon discover that Lawal had fallen from the balcony. He was transported to a hospital but unfortunately pronounced deceased.
The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has been actively involved since they were notified of the incident. Ambassador Shama Shanga has been in discussions with Ugandan authorities, insisting on a complete investigation. NiDCOM Chairman Dabiri-Erewa described the situation as suspicious and emphasized the need for a transparent inquiry, assuring that NiDCOM will follow up on the investigation thoroughly.
