Chinese PhD Student Convicted of Drugging and Raping Multiple Victims

A 28-year-old Chinese PhD student, Zhenhao Zou, was found guilty in a London court for drugging and raping ten women across England and China between 2019 and 2023. Following a month-long trial at the Inner London Crown Court, jurors deliberated for over 19 hours before convicting him on 11 counts of rape. Authorities suspect that there could be over 50 additional victims, classifying Zou as one of the most severe sex offenders in UK history.

Zou was convicted of raping three women in London and seven in China, utilizing hidden cameras to film nine of the assaults as “souvenirs.” He possessed women’s belongings in a trophy box. During the trial, Zou contended that the sexual encounters were consensual, but he will be sentenced on June 19, with indications of a lengthy prison term ahead.

Judge Rosina Cottage described him as a “dangerous and predatory sexual offender,” reflecting the severity of his actions. In addition to the rape charges, he faced convictions for voyeurism, possession of pornographic materials, false imprisonment, and drug possession, specifically butanediol. However, he was acquitted of certain other charges pertaining to drug possession.

Zou, who also went by the name Pakho online, built connections with fellow Chinese students via social media before inviting them to his residence, where he would drug them. Police Commander Kevin Southworth emphasized that Zou incapacitated his victims to prevent resistance, noting that the actual number of victims could be significantly higher than reported.

The Metropolitan Police have requested any additional victims to come forward and share their experiences. The trial also highlighted concerns regarding the interpretation services provided to victims, prompting an apology from police regarding their quality. Dr. Michael Spence, president of University College London, expressed solidarity with the survivors and acknowledged the courage of those who testified against Zou.

Zhenhao Zou’s conviction underscores the grave issue of sexual violence, revealing the potential for numerous unreported victims. His actions, characterized by deceit and predation, highlight critical deficiencies in support systems for victims.
