The Edo Police Command has apprehended eight suspects related to the homicide of Efe Ogbeide, a deaf site engineer, during a leadership dispute in Obazagbon Community, Benin. Confirming the arrests on Thursday, CSP Moses Yamu named Joshua Edo, the chairman of the community youths, as the primary suspect among others including Obayuwana Happy, Uhunwangho Everest, and several others. The suspects were apprehended by the Iyekogba Division’s Operation Rescue and Anti-Kidnapping Unit in various locations.
The violence reportedly arose from conflicts over the positions of community Chairman and traditional leader, Okiaghele, leading to multiple fatalities and extensive property damage. Commissioner of Police Betty Isokpan condemned the violence and assured that all involved would be held accountable, reinforcing the commitment of security agencies to protect community residents.
The murder of Ogbeide triggered significant outrage from civil society organizations, including the Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disabilities (NAPVID) and the Edo State Civil Society Organisations, who organized a protest on Tuesday. NAPVID’s Executive Director, Melody Omosha, emphasized the victim’s dedicated work ethic and underscored that the deaf engineer may not have received the possible warnings prior to the assault. The organizations called for increased justice and enhanced protection measures for individuals with disabilities in the region.
