Calin Georgescu has officially entered the presidential race in Romania following the annulment of the previous election results. According to the Agerpres news agency, he submitted his candidacy on March 7, 2025. This move is significant as the Romanian Constitutional Court recently voided last year’s presidential election, where Georgescu had previously reached the runoff stage.

The ruling coalition has scheduled the first round of the new presidential elections for May 4, 2025, with a runoff anticipated on May 18. Georgescu’s candidacy is supported by notable figures such as George Simion of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) and Anamaria Gavrila from the Young People’s Party (POT). His candidacy submission includes a substantial backing of 324,000 signatures.

Additionally, the Central Electoral Bureau has formally registered Georgescu’s candidacy. Other candidates are also emerging, including Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, who has announced his bid with support from the People’s Movement Party (PMP) and Right Force. Crin Antonescu, representing the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, is also expected to announce his candidacy soon.

Calin Georgescu’s formal entry into the presidential race signifies an important shift in Romania’s political landscape following the annulment of last year’s elections. With a significant number of supporters and competing candidates like Nicusor Dan and Crin Antonescu, the upcoming elections scheduled for May 2025 are anticipated to be pivotal in determining the future leadership of Romania.
