Cross-Border Operation Enhances Security Between South Africa and Namibia

A cross-border operation from February 27 to March 2 between South Africa and Namibia aimed at combating border crime involved various authorities and achieved significant arrests and seizures, promoting safety along the borders.

A coordinated cross-border operation was conducted from February 27 to March 2, targeting crime along the borders between the Republic of South Africa and Namibia. This initiative involved multiple agencies including the South African Police Service, Customs, the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, and the Border Management Authority, achieving notable successes in enhancing border security.

Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the provincial police spokesperson, noted that effective measures such as search and seizure operations, vehicle checkpoints, and increased border patrols were implemented to combat prevalent criminal activities in these areas.

The results of the operation included the inspection of 1,065 vehicles and 1,489 individuals, leading to three arrests for illegal drug possession and for having undocumented foreign nationals. Substantial quantities of illicit drugs, cash believed to aid criminal activities, and various seized goods were also reported.

Confiscated items amounted to Mandrax valued at approximately R4,525, along with fish nets, fish traps, illicit cigarettes estimated at R150,156, and tobacco products worth around R2,000. Traffic violations during the operation resulted in fines totaling R14,600 being issued.

Col Ehlers stated, “These operations will continue between the RSA and neighbouring countries to ensure the safety and security along the borders.” Individuals are encouraged to report criminal incidents through the MySAPS app or by contacting 08600-10111. For cases involving extortion, reports can be made to the National Extortion Hotline at 0800-911-011.
