A North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces has expressed a desire to defect to South Korea, according to remarks made by South Korean lawmaker Rep. Yu Yong-weon. During a press conference, Rep. Yu shared an audio recording of a 70-minute conversation with the soldier, identified only by his surname Ri, who had sustained severe injuries in combat earlier this year. Ri communicated his yearning to reunite with his family and inquired about possible medical care if he made it to Seoul,
including surgical treatment for his wounds.

In his conversation with Rep. Yu, Ri asked poignant questions regarding his potential life in South Korea, expressing hopes of living freely with rights and opportunities, saying, “If I go to (South) Korea, will I be able to live as I wish with the rights I hope for?” He also wondered if he could have a home and start a family, highlighting his desperation for a different life.

Another soldier, identified by his surname Paek, remained uncertain about committing to defection, requesting more time to consider his options. Paek remarked on the tragic reality faced by North Korean soldiers, stating that he had witnessed fellow soldiers opting for self-destruction rather than capture, which he described as a perceived betrayal of their country.

Lawmaker Yu made a plea for diplomatic efforts to ensure that captured North Korean soldiers are not sent back to their home country against their will, advocating for support and protection for these individuals who seek asylum.

The situation surrounding the captured North Korean soldier underscores the complex dynamics of defection and the harsh realities faced by soldiers on both sides of the conflict. The expressed hope and intentions of Ri reflect the dire circumstances within North Korea, as well as the support offered by South Korea. Lawmaker Yu’s call for careful diplomatic measures highlights the international responsibilities in this sensitive matter.
