PKK Announces Cease-Fire to End Long-Standing Conflict with Turkey

The PKK has declared an immediate cease-fire to end decades of conflict with Turkey, prompted by leader Abdullah Ocalan’s call for peace. Ocalan urged the PKK to cease hostilities and dissolve the organization, accepting responsibility for this historic shift. On March 1, UPI reported that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) announced an immediate cease-fire, aimed at ending a prolonged conflict with Turkey that has persisted for over four decades. The announcement followed a call from PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is imprisoned in Turkey. In a statement, Ocalan urged the militia to cease hostilities and dissolve the organization, claiming responsibility for this historic call for peace.

“I am making a call for the laying down of arms and I take on the historical responsibility of this call,” Ocalan stated. He further emphasized that all groups must collaborate in this endeavor to further the peace process and good relations between Turkey and the Kurds, who represent around 20% of Turkey’s population.

Ocalan founded the PKK in 1978 to pursue an independent Kurdish state, igniting a conflict that has taken approximately 40,000 lives. After a fleeting cease-fire in 2013, hostilities resumed due to failed peace negotiations. With three Turkish delegations visiting Ocalan recently, there appears to be renewed interest in ending the conflict.

Despite ongoing tensions, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ambitions for a third presidential term could hinge on securing Kurdish support in parliament, particularly given the Kurds’ representation in the Grand National Assembly. Recent PKK violence, however, including a lethal attack in Ankara last October, poses significant challenges to maintaining the cease-fire.

The announcement of a cease-fire by the PKK marks a critical juncture in the long-standing conflict with Turkey, potentially paving the way for renewed diplomatic relations.
