Today in the Palace of Independence, President Alexander Lukashenko held discussions with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Head of the Libyan National Army, marking an important diplomatic moment. This meeting underscored the long-standing friendship between Belarus and Libya, despite the ongoing conflicts within Libya. Lukashenko highlighted his government’s readiness to deepen bilateral ties and support Libya’s recovery efforts amid the challenges it faces.
While Belarusian-Libyan cooperation has seen little recent activity, both leaders have reiterated the historical bond between their nations. The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxim Ryzhenkov, pointed out the necessity of assisting Libya, emphasizing Belarus’s prior engagement with the country and condemnation of NATO’s actions that contributed to Libya’s current state of turmoil. Ryzhenkov noted that Libya is moving towards normalization and is in need of supportive international partners like Belarus.
In their meeting, Lukashenko expressed awareness of Libya’s situation and reiterated his commitment to assist, saying, “Mr. Haftar, please consider that you have come to your friends, to your home…I have a special attitude towards your people.” He stressed that any agreements reached during Haftar’s visit would be fulfilled promptly, welcoming cooperation in various fields.
Field Marshal Haftar responded positively, indicating his appreciation for the invitation and eagerness to foster ties with Belarus. He remarked on the stability of Belarus amidst surrounding tensions and commended its technological advancements. Haftar expressed a strong desire for strategic cooperation between the two nations, stating, “We have a very strong desire to create strategic cooperation between us, Mr. President, for the future.”
The discussions lasted approximately two and a half hours, most of which were held confidentially. Their meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts, with Lukashenko presenting certificates for domestic tractors and buses to the Libyan delegation, symbolizing a commitment to constructive engagement and mutual support.
