Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has launched a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid project in Niger State to provide reliable electricity to around 3,500 households and small businesses in Bands D and E. This project is part of a larger initiative aimed at expanding electricity access across Nigeria, supported by potential financing from international partners.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has inaugurated a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid project intended to deliver consistent electricity service to users in Bands D and E of the Lambata Community, situated in Niger State’s Gurara Local Government Area. This initiative is set to benefit around 3,500 households, including small-scale enterprises within the region.

At the commissioning event, Abba Aliyu, CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized the Minister’s commitment to enhancing electricity generation for Band A, B, and C, while ensuring dependable power for Bands D and E. He remarked, “The purpose of this project is aligned with the Minister’s strategy to enhance reliability for Bands D and E.”

Aliyu elaborated that this initiative forms part of a broader strategy to establish 40 interconnected mini-grids in partnership with seven distribution entities. He also noted that discussions during the Minister’s recent visit to Japan resulted in a potential financing opportunity of $200 million, aimed at facilitating the deployment of an additional 100 interconnected mini-grids throughout Nigeria.

Minister Adelabu affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the long-term functionality and sustainability of the project. He further underscored the REA’s focus on developing the necessary capacity to maintain these energy systems effectively.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid in the Lambata Community is a significant step towards improving electricity access in Niger State. The project will serve thousands of households and support local businesses, while the REA remains dedicated to capacity building for sustainable maintenance.
