Cyber crimes in Indonesia have resulted in Rp 33.29 billion in losses as of August 2015, with 36.6 million reported attacks over the past three years. Law enforcement has arrested 497 individuals involved in cyber crime, showing a significant trend correlating to increased internet usage. Additionally, emerging threats, such as hacking luxury cars, raise further concerns for cybersecurity.

According to Police Comm. Gen. Agung Setya, cyber crimes in Indonesia have resulted in losses of Rp 33.29 billion as of August 2015. The police have reported an alarming 36.6 million attacks on internet networks over three years. This data suggests that Indonesia remains highly susceptible to cyber threats, as noted in the Data Security Threat report of 2013.

From 2012 to April 2015, the Indonesian Police’s IT/Cyber Crime division apprehended 497 individuals connected to cyber crimes, of whom 389 were foreigners and 108 were Indonesians. The escalation of cybercrime correlates directly with the growing number of internet users and the increased speed of internet connections across the country.

Setya highlighted a new trend: the hacking of luxury vehicles, facilitated by new internet-connected technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This issue gains particular relevance considering cases in other countries, such as the reported 6,000 incidents of keyless-entry car theft in London in the previous year.

In summary, cyber crimes have inflicted substantial financial damages in Indonesia, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to such threats. Continuous monitoring and law enforcement actions are essential to combat the rise in cyber criminal activities, particularly as they evolve with technological advancements. The alarming figure of Rp 33.29 billion in losses and the arrest of hundreds indicate a pressing need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
