A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Morocco on February 10, 2025, centered in Chefchaouen. The USGS noted widespread reports of the quake. This event followed a sequence of significant earthquakes, including a 5.9-magnitude quake in Vanuatu and a 7.6-magnitude quake in the Cayman Islands, along with a tsunami warning for Mexico that was lifted shortly after.
On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Morocco, specifically centered in Chefchaouen at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). At the time of reporting, the USGS had received 420 notifications from individuals who felt the tremor. This occurrence came shortly after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on the same day, also recorded by the USGS.
The Vanuatu earthquake, located in Port-Vila and at a depth of 18 kilometers, occurred a few hours following a significant 7.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Cayman Islands on February 8. The Cayman Islands earthquake was centered in George Town at a similar depth of 10 kilometers. Amid these seismic events, a tsunami warning was briefly issued for the Mexican coastline but was rescinded after two hours.
The National Weather Service Warning Center confirmed, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners. The tsunami threat has passed. Unusual currents may be noticed in some areas. Exercise normal caution.”
Prior to the Cayman Islands earthquake, a series of earthquakes had also been reported in California, with a 3.4-magnitude quake occurring on February 7. This followed a 2.9-magnitude quake in Petrolia, California, on February 6, which itself was preceded by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Alaska on February 5. Each event highlighted an active period of seismic activity in various regions.
This report highlights a series of significant earthquakes occurring on February 10, 2025, including a 5.1-magnitude quake in Morocco and a 5.9-magnitude quake in Vanuatu. The Cayman Islands also experienced a notable earthquake on February 8, with a temporary tsunami warning for Mexico that was later lifted. Understanding these seismic events underscores the importance of monitoring geological activity worldwide.
