Second Intensive Weather Forecast Testbed Launches in Southern Africa
The WISER EWSA project will commence its second intensive forecasting testbed in Zambia on January 30, 2025, with support from regional centres. This testbed will enhance weather forecast capabilities and provide timely alerts to vulnerable communities following recent destructive cyclones in the region.
On January 30, 2025, the Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) Early Warnings for Southern Africa (EWSA) project will initiate its second intensive forecasting testbed in Zambia, with participation from centres based in South Africa and Mozambique. This initiative aims to enhance weather forecasting and disseminate critical weather alerts to communities vulnerable to severe weather.
Southern Africa is increasingly susceptible to devastating weather events, exemplified by the recent impacts of Tropical Cyclones Dikeledi and Chido, which resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. To better prepare communities for future weather threats, a collaborative effort among meteorologists and scientists will focus on improving forecasting methodologies and early warning systems.
The intensive forecasting testbed represents a concerted effort to bolster early warning systems in southern Africa, addressing the urgent need for accurate forecasting amidst increasing climate-related disturbances. The engagement with local communities and stakeholders is essential for developing sustainable solutions to mitigate the risks associated with severe weather events in the region.
